Do you know: What is the Mind and Body Connection?

Before we start, I would like to start off with a philosophical question…

“Can the mind exist without the body?” Yes, no or maybe? We do not know for sure.

However, what we do know is that the body and mind are strongly linked; a change in one variable can have a significant impact on the other. This brings me to my next point. What exactly is the mind-body connection? And how can we use it to benefit us in our day to day lives?

The definition of the mind-body connection refers to our thoughts, feelings and beliefs having influence over the biological functioning of our physical bodies. The connection between this nonphysical and physical aspect is what we will be diving into. Exciting right!

1. The Power of the Subconscious Mind

First of all, let’s not deny that our minds are very powerful things. In fact, our brains are one of the most, if not the most important organ in our entire body. It is where our consciousness and memories reside. To add on, the brain is the most energy-consuming organ in our bodies, accounting for up to 20% of our body’s total energy needs. For its relative size, the energy it consumes on a daily basis is simply astounding!

You’ve probably heard of this phenomenon before – The Placebo Effect. In case you’ve never heard of it, the placebo effect essentially refers to a beneficial result usually experienced by a person which cannot be attributed to the placebo itself thus must therefore by caused by the person’s belief or expectations of the treatment. Put it simply, our expectations and beliefs have been shown to have cause and effect on our physiology. This includes reaction speed, blood pressure, strength etc.

2. Your mind is like a garden

Mind is like fertile soil

Like seeds in fertile soil, whatever we plant will invariably return to us.

A very good example is the ever-pervasive stress. It is undeniable what effects stress can have on our bodies. From financial to work to relationship issues, stress can come from a multitude of places. Thus, we need effective ways to combat this.

According to science, studies have shown that prolonged exposure to stress can have various detrimental effects on the mind and body. For example, stress can manifest itself into symptoms such as insomnia, elevated and irregular heart rates, anxiety, high cortisol levels and increased sweating. The list goes on…

Other fantastic examples are negative emotions and their detrimental effects. For example, anger weakens the liver; grief weakens the lungs, worry weakens the stomach; and fear weakens the kidneys. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could control our thoughts and alter our physiology in a more positive and resourceful way? Positive thoughts would be able to manifest themselves into useful energy that put us in resourceful states. We would then be able to face obstacles head on in a more grounded state.

When comparing the mind to fertile land, Earl Nightingale, an American radio speaker and author, once famously said “The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn’t care what we plant…success…or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal…or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant must return to us.” Thus, we must be like a farmer and carefully choose what thoughts we allow to grow in our fertile minds. We must nurture our thoughts just like seeds and as they grow, so will our overall beliefs and physiology. This will affect how we carry ourselves throughout the day.

Start planting high quality thoughts in your mind today! And get rid of the negative ones that do not serve you.

You will begin to feel a difference in the way you carry out your day; you might even begin walking around with a spring in your step!

Genuinely try these out for 30 days and see if you feel a difference. Always find a comfortable spot where you can sleep undisturbed.

Associate pain and pleasure to what you want to alter or change in your life. E.g. cigarettes, sugar

Link pleasure to good habits and positive thoughts to keep yourself stress free and cheerful. Your body language will reflect this and convey your sense of health and joviality. Similarly, link negative thoughts and feelings to things you wish to move away from.

What can we learn

Our brain is just like a plot of land, or a computer. Whatever we put into it will grow and manifest thought our thoughts and actions, determining our future paths in life. Take control of your programming and form good habits that will help you. Don’t like flossing your teeth? Start flossing your teeth today, associate pleasure to how good it feels to have a truly clean mouth, and make it a lasting habit! It might see trivial at first but just remember, thoughts manifest and keep growing. Having the discipline to do this will carry on to other areas of your lives. Take full responsibility of your current thought, actions and situation. Start becoming the best and healthiest version of yourself, today.

Today begins the first day of the rest of your life. Take action NOW. Don’t procrastinate. If you currently do, start by eliminating this bad habit.
